for Wet to Medium-Wet Soils and Full or Near-Full Sun
Perfect for soils with an abundance of moisture or prolonged wet conditions. But, even a naturally wet area can dry out in summer's heat.  We classify a medium-wet soil (also called wet-mesic) as one that is excessively wet in spring and after heavy rains but often dries out in summer.
Your meadow will explode with color and texture in June and July with Rose Milkweed, Mountain Mint, Bunch Flower, Iris, Sedges & Rushes, and many more pictured here.  Although some of the native plants in this seed mix have ranges that extend beyond zones 3-7,  the majority will do best in this zone range.  For more detailed information please see the RANGE MAP for each species.  View the complete species list, including % by weight, under COMPONENTS.

For seed mixes of 1/8 acre or less, we include a temporary cover crop at no additional charge.  ReGreen is a sterile, short-lived perennial wheat hybrid that can be planted spring or fall.

Add a Seed Mix Enhancement for that extra splash of color!

Establishing a native plant community from seed can take 3 years or more - learn more.

All mixes are subject to change without notice depending on availability of species.

5 Questions asked on Short Sedge Meadow Seed Mix

Would this be good for the bottom or edge of a rain garden in full sun? Usual midwest weather - rainy spring, dry summer with occasional heavy rains.
Hi Sara, Yes, this mix includes species that tolerate a fairly wide range of moisture conditions, and should make a great choice for a rain garden in full sun. You might also want to check out our Detention Basin Seed Mix or our Rain Garden for Pollinators kit!
What is the average height of this seed mix?
Hi David, It's hard to say exactly how tall a seed mix will end up, because it depends on the growing conditions and the resulting species composition on each site. This mix contains several species that get to be about 2 feet tall, the majority of the species can get to around 3 or 4 feel tall, and a few can get to be 5 feet tall in ideal growing conditions.
will the plants in this mix benefit from occasional burning after a couple or few years to get established? are there any of your seed mixes which don't respond well to prescribed burns?
Hi Rico, Burning is a great tool to manage a short sedge meadow. All of our mixes should respond well to a dormant season burn. Historically, these plant communities would have seen frequent fire. The Shady Woodland Mix contains plants that would have historically seen fire the least frequently, but still would benefit from an occasional burn to keep woody plants in check.
I was wondering if this is a good seed mix to plant into grass?
Hi Claire, We do not advise planting any of our seed mixes into turf grass. We have experimented with this approach, and it doesn't work. Planting into short, cool-season pasture grasses can work, but it takes several years of controlled burns before you start to see results. Please check out our blog How to Prep your Site for a Native Seed Mix.
We have a lot of deer in our woods and prairie. How does this mixture work with deer? We have planted the woodland mixture and we are loosing many of our oaks to disease so there is more light than in a deep woods.
Hi Rebecca. About half of the species in the Short Sedge Meadow Mix are considered deer resistant. The Deer Resistant seed mix is probably a better option if the local deer eat a lot of the plants; even this seed mix will need some protection while the species mature and develop their deer resistant features. This mix should do well in light shade, but if the dappled shade of your oak woodland receives less than 4 hours of direct sunlight, the Shortgrass Woods Edge or Savanna seed mix would be a better choice.

Native plant communities provide the inspiration for our seed-mix designs. All our mixes feature high seeding rates and a diverse balance of native species, which, when mature, will provide blossoms throughout the year. No matter what you want from a seed mix, you will need to make sure it fits the soil-moisture holding capacity and sun conditions of your site.

E stablishment of the diverse native-plant communities represented in our seed mixes can take three to five years. The most critical process before planting is preparing the site by removing unwanted species and working to deplete the soil’s weed seed bank. Shipping Season

SEED, TOOLS and BOOKS are sent year-round. Most orders ship within 1-3 business days.

BARE ROOT PLANTS are shipped during optimal transplanting time: Spring (April-May) and Fall (Oct). Some ephemeral species are also available for summer shipping. Since our plants are field-grown, Nature sets the schedule each year as to when our season will begin and end. We fill all orders, on a first-come, first-serve basis, to the best of our ability depending on weather conditions beyond our control.

POTTED PLANTS (Trays of 32/38/50 plugs and 3-packs) typically begin shipping early May and go into June; shipping time is heavily dependent on all the species in your order being well-rooted. If winter-spring greenhouse growing conditions are favorable and all species are well-rooted at once, then we ship by order date (first come, first serve). We are a Midwest greenhouse, and due to the challenges of getting all the species in the Mix & Match and Pre-Designed Garden Kits transit-ready at the same time, we typically can't ship before early May. Earlier shipment requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

*We are unable to ship PLANTS (bare root or potted) outside the contiguous US or to CALIFORNIA due to regulations.

Delivery

We ship using USPS, UPS and Spee Dee. UPS and Spee Dee are often used for expediting plant orders; they will not deliver to Post Office Box numbers, so please also include your street address if ordering plants. We send tracking numbers to your email address so please include it when you order.
