Shipping Information
With all of our plant orders, it is our current policy to charge cards as we ship. There are too many variables with live plants to charge an order many months in advance of shipment. A "pre-auth" was put on your card when you placed your order, but it was not the charge. Those pre-authorizations drop off your account within a few days. As we gear up to ship plants, we will go out for another pre-auth on your card (which is encrypted). If your card is declined we will contact you. A shipping confirmation email will be sent, and the real charge will appear on your credit card as your order is loaded on the truck.
*We are unable to ship PLANTS (bare root or potted) outside the contiguous US or to CALIFORNIA due to regulations.
BARE ROOT PLANTS:
We ship dormant bare roots with USPS, UPS and SpeeDee (Upper Midwest). Since our plants are field grown, nature sets the schedule each year as to when our digging season will begin and end. Our Minnesota climate often provides us with April or October snows and/or frozen ground, heavy rains, etc. We ship first-come, first-serve. We fill all orders to the best of our ability depending on conditions beyond our control. In the spring, plants are normally shipped from April to late-May. The fall plant shipping season usually runs through the month of October.
POTTED PLANTS:
We ship potted trays (32, 38 or 50 plants) with UPS and SpeeDee (Upper Midwest). We cannot ship trays to PO Boxes; we must have a street address and email. Our 3-pack potted plants ship with USPS, UPS and SpeeDee (Upper Midwest). Potted plants pre-ordered for Spring typically begin shipping late April and go into June. Fall potted pre-orders ship beginning late August and go into September; shipping time is heavily dependent on the species being well-rooted, and then by order date (first come, first serve). We are a Midwest greenhouse, and due to the challenges of getting all the species in the Mix & Match and Pre-Designed Garden Kits transit-ready at the same time, we typically can't ship before early May. Earlier shipment requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
SEED:
We ship seed year-round. Most orders ship within 1-3 business days.
*Free shipping on $100+ seed orders is for online, retail orders. Phone orders, custom seed mixes, or discounted seed sales over $100, add 5% of the total seed cost.
Delivery:
Please refer to the US map below for estimated time in transit from Prairie Moon to you.
If you need to receive your order on a certain day (Monday through Friday), please include your preferred arrival date in the 'Order Instructions' during the online checkout process. We will contact you if the requested delivery dates is not feasible or if there will be an additional charge for expedited shipping. For orders over $1,000 a package signature may be required.
Seed Shipments to Canada:
We are unable to ship Plants, Books, Eco-Grass, or Tools to Canada, but small amounts of seed (that fit in one mailer) are available year-round to Canadian customers.
We ship via US Postal Service First Class International. The price listed on prairiemoon.com is in U.S. dollars, not Canadian dollars.
Shipping & handling charges for Canadian seed shipments are:
• For SEED ORDERS $100.00 and under: $20.00
• For SEED ORDERS over $100.00 add 30% of the total seed cost
Canadian Customers are responsible for additional import/brokerage fees or any additional import paperwork.
*December 2025 update: There has been a recent and significant increase in the number of USPS - CPC seed orders that are not arriving or taking many weeks or months to arrive. USPS is our only method of shipping seeds to Canada; we no longer use UPS. We are monitoring the situation, but by proceeding with your order, you are acknowledging the risks. We cannot re-ship or refund orders not received.
Pick-up Orders:
We are a mail order nursery and have no retail facilities, but you may pick up your order if prior arrangements are made. There is no handling charge for orders picked up at the nursery but customers must pay the 7.375% state sales tax.
State Sales Tax:
We are required to collect state sales tax in certain states. Shipping fees are also taxable in most states. Your state's eligibility and % will be calculated at checkout.
