 Drought-Tolerant Northeast Meadow Mix

This showy meadow mix is an explosion of color, structure and texture, and was formulated specifically to support bees, butterflies and moths at the greatest risk of local extinction in the Northeast through their varied pollen, nectar and host plant requirements. Comprised of only the most drought-resilient native plant species, it provides consistent blooms from spring through fall. Most of the plants in this mix are also salt-tolerant.

At-risk pollinator species that are supported by this mix include Bombus fervidus (Golden Northern Bumble Bee), Bombus pensylvanicus (American Bumble Bee), Megachile melanophaea (Black-bellied Leafcutter Bee), Habropoda laboriosa (Blueberry Digger Bee), Hoary Edge (Achalarus lyciades), Frosted Elfin (Callophrys irus), Common Wood Nymph (Cercyonis pegala), Cobweb Skipper (Hesperia metea), Pink-streak (Dargida rubripennis), Day Emerald (Mesothea incertata), Columbine Borer (Papaipema leucostigma) and Aster cutworm (Trichordestra lilacina).

 Shop Meadow Mix Drought-Tolerant Northeast Native Lawn Alternative Mix

This low-growing, drought-resilient combination of native forbs and graminoids tolerates occasional mowing and regular foot traffic. We recommend installing the Native Lawn Alternative as a matrix of plugs laid out in a somewhat random, naturalistic pattern and then overseeded with this seed mix. It is not recommended to install this design as a seed mix only, as many of the species establish slowly, and weeds are likely to flourish.

Recommended plug species include Antennaria neglecta, Antennaria plantaginifolia, Blephilia ciliata, Carex pensylvanica, Pedicularis canadensis, Prunella vulgaris ssp. lanceolata and Viola pallens.

This native lawn alternative mix supports pollinators at the greatest risk of local extinction in the Northeast. At-risk species that are supported by this mix include Bombus fervidus (Golden Northern Bumble Bee), Bombus borealis (Northern Amber Bumble Bee), Colletes compactus (Aster Cellophane Bee), Heriades leavitti (Leavitt's Sculptured Mason Bee), Megachile brevis (Short Leafcutter Bee), Protandrena compositarum (Composite Bare-Miner), American Lady (Vanessa virginiensis), Catocaline Dart (Cryptocala acadiensis) and Aster cutworm (Trichordestra lilacina).
