Silphium laciniatum (Compass Plant)
Compass Plant's name derived from the tendency of its flat leaves to orient themselves on a North-South axis. The Early Settlers used it to guide their way. The majestic Compass Plant can reach heights of 8 feet when well-established in wetter soils, although it can also thrive in drier soils. It has been known to live 100 years! Birds will frequently perch on Compass Plants (see corresponding picture).
