We are offering this seed mix in cooperation with the "Bring Back the Pollinators" campaign of the non-profit Xerces Society. Pollinators are critical to human food crops yet our practices result in habitat loss, environmental toxins and monocultural cropping that compound stressors on them, threatening their, and our, survival. To counter this trend and introduce more pollinator-friendly plant diversity, this uniquely diverse, 100% North American native mix includes species that produce not only nectar but the habitat that pollinators require for survival.

Designed for full-sun to partial-shade sites with medium soils, this mixed-height mix boasts grasses and most wildflowers at 3', with some flowers reaching 6' at full bloom. Bloom times progress spring through fall. Our Pollinator-Palooza Seed Mix moves beyond more common pollinator mixes by offering plants that appeal to a broad array of pollinating insects. Included in the 45 species are some not commonly available like Late Figwort and Hairy Mountain Mint. Although some of the native plants in this seed mix have ranges that extend beyond zones 3-7, the majority will do best in this zone range. Research shows that inclusion of native plantings near agricultural crops greatly enhances crop yield, attracts native pollinators, improves ecosystems and lessens reliance on already-stressed European-introduced honeybees that annually are transported around the country to flowering crops. Pollinator-Palooza's blend of flowers and grasses will be equally appealing to humans and insects. We believe this mix will help enlighten everyone to the importance of pollinator habitat.

For seed mixes of 1/8 acre or less, we include a temporary cover crop at no additional charge. ReGreen is a sterile, short-lived perennial wheat hybrid that can be planted spring or fall.

Hi Andrea. Great question! Our pre-designed seed mixes are designed to perform well from the Midwest to the Northeast, primarily in zones 4-6. However, there is flexibility, and planted with the right sun exposure and soil moisture, our mixes can do well in zones 3-7.

The species diversity in the Pollinator-Palooza Mix makes it flexible for planting in a variety of soil types: clay, loam, or sandy loam. Matching the soil moisture holding capacity of your site to the seed mix is the most important. The Pollinator-Palooza will do well on medium-wet to medium-dry soils, so as long as your soil is not excessively wet or dry, you should have success.

Hi Pablo. Thank you for your questions. We are a Midwest native seed and plant nursery so our prairie, woodland and wetland plants thrive in this part of the country; our seed sources are also from this part of the US. Native to the Midwest often also means a plant is/was native to the Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states and/or thrive there as well. Since we work ONLY WITH NATIVES, we have a RANGE MAP on each individual species page that shows the native and adventive range of that particular species, rather than the USDA hardiness zone map (although we do have USDA zones listed under ‘DETAILS’ on the web page of many of the more popular natives we sell.)

For our pre-designed Seed Mixes, like this Pollinator-Palooza Mix, you can be sure they are made up of native species that will thrive in the US areas I mentioned. No, we don't use insecticides on our plants and are proudly Neonicotinoid-free. You can read more here.

Does this need to be stratified before planting?

The majority of species in our mixes require stratification in order to germinate. Because there are a variety of species with different stratification requirements, we recommend sowing the mix anytime late-fall through winter. We do not recommend artificially stratifying our mixes.

If planted in the spring, a few species will germinate (mostly grasses) and the rest will lie dormant until the following spring.

The grass species, and the % of grasses in the mix is listed under the "COMPONENTS" tab on this page. Our pre-designed seed mixes are always made up of a high concentration of wildflowers and grasses, and they are fairly distributed. It is important to look for the % of each species in a seed mix because if it is not advertised, you could be getting a large amount of an inexpensive species, like a grass, and just a small amount of wildflowers.

As for Deer-Resistance, no the entire mix is not deer resistant. However, many species in the mix deer tend to avoid, like Hyssops, Onions, Milkweed, Bergamot, Liatris, Mountain Mints, Goldenrods, the Prairie Grasses, and more...

Hi Renee, That's an interesting question! One reason may be the difference in fertilization and watering requirements. Veggies love to be fed and watered, whereas native plants do better with a hands-off approach and may respond negatively to fertilization and frequent watering. It may be fun to try though!

Would this work in a ditch in northeast Ohio? My ditch is just steep/deep enough that I cannot mow it. It doesn't have a lot of standing water usually, and the grass in it currently doesn't mind! I am hoping this may be a solution to my mowing problem and still look nice in my front yard. However, I am all ears to other solutions!

Hi Karin, Yes, it sounds like a good situation for this mix! You should still plan to try to remove all vegetation and weed seeds in the soil before planting.

I have an +/-1000 sq ft area consisting of mostly grass. I'm thinking about seeding into the sod with the PDQ mix this spring, then overseeing in the fall/winter with the Pollinator Palooza mix. Your opinion / recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Terri. I think you will be disappointed with the results. Traditional lawn grass has aggressive rhizomes that will quickly crowd out any new native seedlings from the PDQ that are trying to take hold this spring/summer.

We would suggest killing off the area and planting late fall. Options to prep the site can be found by typing "site prep" in the search bar; smothering or herbicides may be your best option.

Hey, I have a few acres that I'm converting over to an orchard/pollinator sanctuary. The area im sure has a large weed seed bank in it. Do you think if I focused on a smaller areas at a time and over seeded heavily with the pollinator seed mix that would be enough to choke out the weed seed bank? Thanks

Hi Tyler. Starting with a small area is best. We highly recommend preparing a site and exhausting as much of the weed seed bank as possible (for at least 1 full growing season) before sowing your native seed. Although these species are competitive, they will have a difficult time elbowing out any weeds already established on site.

Native plant communities provide the inspiration for our seed-mix designs. All our mixes feature high seeding rates and a diverse balance of native species, which, when mature, will provide blossoms throughout the year. No matter what you want from a seed mix, you will need to make sure it fits the soil-moisture holding capacity and sun conditions of your site.

Establishment of the diverse native-plant communities represented in our seed mixes can take three to five years. The most critical process before planting is preparing the site by removing unwanted species and working to deplete the soil’s weed seed bank. Shipping Season

SEED, TOOLS and BOOKS are sent year-round. Most orders ship within 1-3 business days.

BARE ROOT PLANTS are shipped during optimal transplanting time: Spring (April-May) and Fall (Oct). Some ephemeral species are also available for summer shipping. Since our plants are field-grown, Nature sets the schedule each year as to when our season will begin and end. We fill all orders, on a first-come, first-serve basis, to the best of our ability depending on weather conditions beyond our control.

POTTED PLANTS (Trays of 32/38/50 plugs and 3-packs) typically begin shipping early May and go into June; shipping time is heavily dependent on all the species in your order being well-rooted. If winter-spring greenhouse growing conditions are favorable and all species are well-rooted at once, then we ship by order date (first come, first serve). We are a Midwest greenhouse, and due to the challenges of getting all the species in the Mix & Match and Pre-Designed Garden Kits transit-ready at the same time, we typically can't ship before early May. Earlier shipment requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

*We are unable to ship PLANTS (bare root or potted) outside the contiguous US or to CALIFORNIA due to regulations.

Delivery

We ship using USPS, UPS and Spee Dee. UPS and Spee Dee are often used for expediting plant orders; they will not deliver to Post Office Box numbers, so please also include your street address if ordering plants. We send tracking numbers to your email address so please include it when you order.
