5 Questions asked on Seed Mix Enhancement for a Shady Woodland

Do the seed mixes need to be spread in the fall or can they be spread any time?
They can be spread at any time, but will have different results. Please see the pros and cons here.

To clarify, this is a seed mix enhancement, which is different from a seed mix. It is designed to be an addition to an existing planting or to be sown in conjunction with a seed mix. All the species in this enhancement require overwintering to germinate. So while it can be sown at any time, germination wouldn’t be expected until the following spring.
Can the seed mix enhancement be sown over leaf mulch in fall or is it best to rake leaves prior to seeding the area with existing plantings in fall ?
If there is a thick mulch layer it will be good to rake that aside to ensure the seeds are able to make contact with the soil. I wouldn't worry about leaves blowing back into the area later in the fall.
What seed mix does this go well with. There are no plantings in the area.
This enhancement would go well with the Shady Woodland Seed Mix You could also add diversity by transplanting species not available in seed such as Ferns, Trilliums, Hepatica, and Trout Lily.
In an area with ferns and potentially some trillium, do you still need a base seed mix? What is the difference between a seed mix and a seed mix enhancement?
Enhancements are intended to add diversity and a range of bloom times to an existing planting, so it sounds like this is the right option for you! They are not intended to be used alone on a newly planted site. If you were killing off weeds and then starting with a new planting, you would want to use a base seed mix with the enhancement.
When adding to an existing prairie in shaded area, is it best to plant the enhancement seed in the Fall or in winter in snow? Should the area be mowed and raked prior to seeding with either or both?
You want to ensure the area will allow for good seed to soil contact. If there is a very dense layer of leaves, you may want to rake some of it away,. but be careful not to disturb the decomposed leaves/duff layer too much as this is usually a good germination bed. Sowing in fall or winter are both good options - the seed will work its way into the soil with the freeze/thaw cycles. Many folks like to time their planting just before a snowfall so the seed gets buried under a blanket of snow right away. When planting into an established area, you will want to adjust your expectations for the establishment phase - it may take up to 3-5 years for the newly seeded plants to start making their presence known.

Native plant communities provide the inspiration for our seed-mix designs. All our mixes feature high seeding rates and a diverse balance of native species, which, when mature, will provide blossoms throughout the year. No matter what you want from a seed mix, you will need to make sure it fits the soil-moisture holding capacity and sun conditions of your site.

Establishment of the diverse native-plant communities represented in our seed mixes can take three to five years. The most critical process before planting is preparing the site by removing unwanted species and working to deplete the soil’s weed seed bank. Shipping Season

SEED, TOOLS and BOOKS are sent year-round. Most orders ship within 1-3 business days.

BARE ROOT PLANTS are shipped during optimal transplanting time: Spring (April-May) and Fall (Oct). Some ephemeral species are also available for summer shipping. Since our plants are field-grown, Nature sets the schedule each year as to when our season will begin and end. We fill all orders, on a first-come, first-serve basis, to the best of our ability depending on weather conditions beyond our control.

POTTED PLANTS (Trays of 32/38/50 plugs and 3-packs) typically begin shipping early May and go into June; shipping time is heavily dependent on all the species in your order being well-rooted. If winter-spring greenhouse growing conditions are favorable and all species are well-rooted at once, then we ship by order date (first come, first serve). We are a Midwest greenhouse, and due to the challenges of getting all the species in the Mix & Match and Pre-Designed Garden Kits transit-ready at the same time, we typically can't ship before early May. Earlier shipment requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

*We are unable to ship PLANTS (bare root or potted) outside the contiguous US or to CALIFORNIA due to regulations.

Delivery

We ship using USPS, UPS and Spee Dee. UPS and Spee Dee are often used for expediting plant orders; they will not deliver to Post Office Box numbers, so please also include your street address if ordering plants. We send tracking numbers to your email address so please include it when you order.
