Aster novae-angliae (New England Aster) matures to 5' in height and has purple flowers. It can tolerate a wide range of soil moistures: soggy wet to medium dry. Like most Asters it blooms late in the summer: Sept and novae-angliae grows best in full sun to partial shade.
Beautiful purple flowers with orange-yellow centers will bring a delightful array of colors to your garden or prairies late in the season. The colors of the New England Aster can vary from purple, violet, and lavender to all shades of pink. Bees and butterflies are attracted to Aster novae-angliae, and the nectar of the flower provides an excellent source for the Monarch butterfly. New England Aster is drought tolerant, and is deer resistant!
It is typical to see New England Aster growing on the
edge of unfarmed wetlands. When the plant is blooming, the lower leaves can often dry up or look quite 'shabby' causing some people to think the plant is dying or has disease. It is normal to see this on so don't be alarmed.
It is frequently called Symphyotrichum novae-angliae.
