Carex grayi (Common Bur Sedge)
Carex grayi has a very ornamental seed head and pleated foliage that has thrived in both sun and shade rain gardens installed here at Prairie Moon.  Like most Sedge species, its most attractive (and most photographed) phase is during its mid-summer fruiting period.

The wind-pollinated flowers of Carex species attract few insects but various butterfly larvae will eat the foliage. The seeds of sedges are food sources for many kinds of birds and small mammals.
