Smaller plantings with a diverse and colorful variety of species can closely simulate native plant communities. Our small area mixes (500 sq. ft. to 1 acre) are carefully designed to fit a wide range of habitat conditions. If your site encompasses different soil, moisture or light conditions, you can plant each area with an appropriate mix, overlapping edges from one mix to another. Another option is to use two or more different mixes combined together to increase the diversity of species and heights.
We classify dry soils as those that are excessively drained. Dry mesic soils are well drained but water is removed from the soil readily; not rapidly. Mesic soil is medium moist, average garden soil. Water soaks in with no run-off. Soils that are wet mesic will be excessively wet in the winter, spring and after heavy rains, but will often dry up in the summer months. A wet soil is an area that is soggy or marshy most of the year.
