Adiantum pedatum (Maidenhair Fern)
Because this fern is susceptible to frost heaving when planted in the fall, we ship them in Spring only.

Watch a VIDEO about Maidenhair Fern.

Maidenhair Fern is highly recommended for home landscaping; it makes a nice border with Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum) and is deer resistant!

Maidenhair Ferns have black, wiry stems and delicate, airy, shining, green triangular pinnae that curl under at the tip to protect a row of spores produced on the undersurface. In ferns the leaves are called "fronds". The frond is made up of subsets called "pinna," not leaflets. The Maidenhair frond is divided at the end in a "C" shaped branching pattern with the finger-like frond segments arising from the "C."

Maidenhair Ferns can grow up to 2 feet tall and about a foot across. They spread slowly by means of a creeping rhizome.

Maidenhair Ferns are easy to grow in the woodland garden, provided it is not too dry. If so, they will go dormant and come back to life when there is enough moisture in the soil again. They grow well in the same kind of environment favored by hostas. Fertile, rich sites produce larger plants than clayey banks.

Another common name in use is Northern Maidenhair Fern.

Dormant bare root plants ship each year during optimal transplanting seasons: Spring (April - May) and Fall (October).
