New Rain Garden

We put in a new rain garden this past May and I would have to say that it has done a lot better than I expected. Almost everything that we put in with the exception of some of the slower growing woody plants has gotten large enough to bloom. We did  have to water quite a bit right after planting as we have had some long dry periods. The weeds have really slacked off now at this time of year and I am looking forward to adding a few more dormant bare root plants this fall.

When we first approached the subject of getting this garden done it was already at least March and I had some concerns that  trying to do a planting project would spread us too thin at a busy time of year.  It was hard to get it all done but now it is in, we have a great start on something, and the local insects seem very happy with it.  I can’t wait to see what will happen out there during the next few growing seasons. Sometimes when I’m in the planning stages of a project I get too focused on trying to imagine what would give the "best" results. It has all been interesting and dynamic as plants often are and  I can’t wait to do it again!
