Emergent Aquatic Plants

Prairie Moon offers many wetland plant species, including some emergent aquatic species for shallow, standing water. You can see a list of all the wetland plants that we offer by using the Plant Finder Tool at our website. Follow the link at the left hand side of our home page (look for the magnifying glass icon). Then select “wet” for soil moisture and click “submit.”
Currently this calls up a list of 189 species. They all have adaptations to tolerate saturated (oxygen-deficient) soils, at least periodically. However, only some of these will tolerate periods of standing water. For those who are planning a lakeshore restoration, pond construction or other project with shallow waters for part or all of the season, I have compiled a list of appropriate plant species (see below).
Most of the species listed below tolerate water depths of less than one foot, and some for only part of the growing season. A few of these species, however, such as Hardstem Bulrush (Scirpus acutus), will tolerate water depths of one foot or greater. At this time we do not offer any floating-leaved, submergent or free-floating plant species, which are dominant in deep, open marshes.
